Remus Night!

  • Smoke Justis 302 Court Street Covington, KY, 41011 United States (map)

On September 14th, we're drinking with a our region's most notorious bootlegger, George Remus, with $9 Remus Old Fashioneds all night long!

In the roaring 1920s, George Remus found a loophole in the Volstead Act which allowed him to buy distilleries and pharmacies to produce and sell bonded liquor for medicinal purposes, under government licenses. His employees would then hijack his own liquor so that he could sell it illegally.

So Remus moved to Cincinnati, where 80 percent of America's bonded whiskey was located within a 300-mile radius, and bought up most of the whiskey manufacturers.

In 1925, he luck ran out and was wrung up on thousands of violations of the Volstead Act and sentenced to 2 years in federal prison.

There, Remus befriended a fellow inmate who JUST SO HAPPENED TO BE A FEDERAL AGENT WHO WENT ON TO HAVE AN AFFAIR WITH REMUS'S WIFE AND PLOT AGAINST HIM!

In 1927, Remus shot his wife in broad daylight in Eden Park, but only got a 7 month sentence after pleading insanity. (Now that's insane.)

Upon his release, he moved to Covington, Kentucky, where he lived a quieter life for 20 years, removed from his former infamy.

The streets of Covington witnessed a Remus who had left his tumultuous past behind. His life's journey, from criminal mastermind to a subdued Covingtonian, showcased the complexities of a man shaped by the excesses and perils of the Prohibition era.
