In 2022, we hosted the inaugural John G. Carlisle Bottled in Bond Competition & Celebration, which gathers regional bourbon lovers to taste and vote for their favorite bottled-in-bond bourbon in commemoration of the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897 and the infamous Covingtonian, John G. Carlisle, who was instrumental in shaping the act into law.

On Friday March 3rd, 2023, the event returns as we celebrate the 126th anniversary!

What is the Bottled In Bond Act?

As one of the very first consumer protection acts in American history, the Bottled in Bond Act actually beat out the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 by nearly a decade.

“It’s higher than the standards in Scotland, and far higher than the standards in such great spirits regions as Japan (whiskey) and France (cognac).” - New Riff's Jay Erisman

Not every whiskey carries the bottled-in-bond label. In fact, to earn this benchmark distinction, bourbon must meet specific criteria, including being the product of one distillation season; aged in bond at least four years; bottled at 100 proof; and labeled with the location of the distillery and the bottling. Of course, as is true of all bourbons, it must be produced in the United States.

This year, we will taste three blind pours, showcasing the finest bottled-in-bond variations from across the nation. As we sip and savor, we'll collectively decide on the year's best BIB and award the prestigious 2023 John G. Carlisle Award.
